The capability to read music and to play by ear are significant skills for all musicians. Students regularly practice these vital skills for preparing for exams.Daily practice of sight reading and ear training form a basis for analyzing and studying new music and for aurally recognizing and identifying musical elements. When students improve their ability and obtain fluency in reading rhythm and pitch patterns, they are building a base for musicianship that will help them understand, perform, and create music during their lifetime.

This curriculum is based on the RCM sight reading and ear training requirements for Levels 1 to 10, which also includes training students to hear what they are actually producing in their own playing. Students will learn to clarify basic rhythms and pitch from different styles of music and understand the relationships between notes by using the Solfège Method. The classes require ear, eye, voice, and hand coordination in a musical frame of reference that has a profound effect on the student’s playing skills.
