The Kawai K-80 (including its variants K-80E and K-80EC) is a premium, flagship-level acoustic upright piano manufactured in Japan by Kawai around 2002. It was built as a special 75th Anniversary version and serves as the direct historical predecessor to Kawai's highly acclaimed modern flagship uprights, the K-8 and the Kawai K-800.
he K-80 was engineered to replicate the tonal power and touch of a grand piano within an upright framework:
- Grand Piano Cabinet Styling: Unlike typical uprights, it features a grand-style music desk that holds sheet music at the exact eye level of a grand piano.
- Front Panel Sound Vents: The K-80E and K-80EC editions include a specialized tone release/escapement port hidden behind the music stand. This design directs sound forward to the player's ears rather than trapping it inside the cabinet, mimicking the open-lid experience of a grand piano.
- ABS-Styran Action: It features Kawai's highly stable composite action parts of that era, ensuring greater environmental resistance and touch consistency compared to all-wood actions.
- True Sostenuto Pedal: As a top-tier professional upright, it features a full functioning middle sostenuto pedal—a selective sustain option almost exclusively reserved for grand pianos—rather than a standard practice mute pedal.
