The Yamaha YU3S is a rare, premium 52-inch (131 cm) professional upright piano that was manufactured exclusively at Yamaha’s flagship facility in Hamamatsu, Japan, from roughly 1997 to 2001. [1, 2]
The "YU" designation signifies that it belongs to Yamaha's coveted "Hand-Finished" custom production runs. It was built as a specialized, upscale alternative to the industry-standard Yamaha U3, specifically engineered to combine a higher tier of acoustic refinement with an integrated factory silent system
- Hand-Finished Acoustic Build: The "YU" family sits strictly above the standard factory line. Master technicians hand-selected the premium tone woods and individually balanced the action to provide a much smoother, more responsive touch than a standard U3.
- Upgraded Soundboard & Longer Sustain: While it shares the same physical cabinet size as a standard U3, the YU3S features a redesigned solid spruce soundboard layout. This specialized acoustic crowning provides superior tone projection, greater amplification, and noticeably longer sustain.
- Concert-Grade Hammers: The internal action is fitted with premium, higher-density under-felt concert hammers. These hammers yield a deeply expressive dynamic range, rounding out the classic, crystal-clear brightness of Yamaha with a warmer and more orchestral mid-range.
- The "S" Factor — Factory Muting System: The "S" in YU3S stands for Silent. This means the piano left the Japanese factory with an integrated mechanical muting rail and under-key optical sensors. Engaging the silent mechanism shifts a rail to prevent physical hammers from hitting the strings, routing a high-quality digital sample directly into connected headphones for private, late-night practice.
- Exceptional Bass Resonance: Standing at a full 131 cm tall, the frame accommodates extra-long bass strings. This length gives the YU3S a thunderous, authoritative lower register that can easily match or exceed the presence of a compact baby grand piano.
