The Yamaha YU3 is a highly acclaimed, premium 52-inch (131 cm) professional studio upright piano that was manufactured at Yamaha’s flagship facility in Hamamatsu, Japan, from roughly 1997 to 2001.
Positioned strictly above the standard factory production line, the "YU" series represents Yamaha's "Hand-Finished" custom production runs. It was engineered as a more refined, upscale alternative to the industry-standard Yamaha U3, offering advanced acoustic upgrades tailored for serious musicians, educators, and recording environments.
Core Engineering & Tonal Highlights
  • Hand-Finished Acoustic Core: While it shares the same physical cabinet dimensions as the standard U3, the YU3 went through a significantly elevated manufacturing process. Master technicians spent extensive time on the individual voicing, regulating, and fine-balancing of the action, resulting in a remarkably smooth touch and fluid key response.
  • Upgraded Soundboard Design: The YU3 features a high-grade solid spruce soundboard with optimized acoustic crowning. This structural advancement gives the piano superior tone projection, greater amplification, and longer sustain compared to a baseline standard U3 from the same era.
  • Premium Hammer Felt: The internal action is fitted with premium, higher-density under-felt concert hammers. These hammers yield a deeply expressive dynamic range, rounding out the classic, crystal-clear brightness of Yamaha with a warmer, darker, and more orchestral mid-range.
  • Soft-Close Fallboard Safety: The YU3 features a modernized cabinet design that incorporates Yamaha's Soft-Close Fallboard (slow-closing keyboard lid) mechanism. This prevents accidental slamming, protecting fingers and the cabinet hardware.
  • Aggressive Back Post Reinforcement: The rear wooden back posts are heavily reinforced to securely handle over 20 tons of string tension. This provides the YU3 with incredible structural integrity and legendary tuning stability under heavy daily practice.
