The Yamaha UX is the legendary progenitor model of Yamaha's highly sought-after "X Series" (or UX Series) premium 52-inch (131 cm) professional upright pianos.
Handcrafted exclusively at Yamaha’s flagship factory in Hamamatsu, Japan, between approximately 1975 and 1980, the original UX was engineered to be a conservatory-grade, upgraded alternative to the industry-standard Yamaha U3. Today, it remains highly revered on the pre-owned and refurbished piano markets for its robust build quality and distinct acoustic power.
- The Original X-Brace Back Frame: The defining structural signature of the UX is the massive X-shaped wooden post configuration reinforcing the back of the piano. While a standard U3 utilizes vertical, parallel back posts, the radial X-frame distributes the collective 20+ tons of string tension much more evenly. This immense structural rigidity gives the UX incredible cabinet stability and legendary tuning stability.
- Grand Piano-Style Agraffes: Unlike standard uprights where strings are held in place by basic pressure bars, the original UX incorporates solid brass agraffes in the bass and mid-range sections. Typically reserved for grand pianos, agraffes lock the strings down tightly at the exact strike point, eliminating wasted string vibration and channeling maximum energy into the soundboard for long, singing sustain.
- Curved Bass Bridge & Extended Bass Strings: By modifying the internal scale design with a curved bass bridge layout, Yamaha managed to fit noticeably longer bass strings inside the UX than what is found in a standard U3. This extra string length produces a deep, thunderous bass register that punches far above its physical footprint.
- Premium Material & Component Selections: As a luxury model, the UX was constructed using higher-tier, straight-grained solid spruce for its soundboard, premium mahogany-core hammers wrapped in dense under-felt, and high-tensile concert-grade wire. This allows it to throw a warmer, richer, and less brittle tone than standard vintage U3 models.
- Front Panel Sound Escape Vents: The front cabinet casing features built-in tone escape slits behind the music desk. Instead of sealing the sound completely inside the wooden box, these escape vents allow acoustic resonance to project directly out toward the performer, simulating the immediate listening experience of playing a grand piano.
